Human activities have profoundly altered Earth's biogeochemical cycles, disrupting the balance of carbon and other greenhouse gases and introducing widespread pollutants into the environment. These changes are placing increasing stress on marine ecosystems through climate change, heatwaves, ocean acidification, altered nutrient and trace metal distribution, and pollution with plastic, oil or other chemicals.
The Marine Biogeochemistry and Pollutants Group investigates how changing biogeochemical cycles affect marine ecosystems and the ocean's capacity to regulate climate. We combine global Earth System Models, 1D dynamic particle flux models, Lagrangian models, and machine learning techniques with new observations from BGC-Argo floats and satellites to study key ocean processes.
Our current research focuses on zooplankton seasonal migration and the associated lipid pump, coral reef responses to climate change on present and paleo timescales, climate-driven changes in mixotrophy, interactions between marine microplastic pollution and the biological carbon pump, and marine particle distribution as observed by BGC-Argo floats.
