Mass Spectrometer Laboratory

Isotope Measurements have a long tradition at the Climate and Environmental Physics Department. A first instrument (GD-150) was purchased in the early 1970's. These times mainly hydrological investigations were performed (Siegenthaler, 1979). Shortly after lake sediments analyses commenced. This lead to the well-known Gerzensee-Greenland comparison of oxygen isotope records (Eicher et al., 1976).  In 1979, a new instrument was ordered. A Finnigan MAT 250, which was at that time the state-of-art instrument. A bunch of most interesting results were obtained. A glimpse of those can be seen in the publication list below. In 1990, this instrument was equipped with 4 additional cup collectors. It allow us to monitor many different ratios simultaneously. Again many important results could be gathered.

In 1998, we got funding for a major update of our stable isotope facilities. Two ThermoFinnigan MAT Delta Plus XL were purchased. One instrument is dedicated to online isotope measurements whereas the other instrument with its layout of 8 cup collector will mainly be used to trace differences of the air composition.
